French AI Observatory in Rome - May

AI for the Common Good: Recap of the Rome Conference on May 3, 2025

On May 3, 2025, a conference was held in Rome as part of the French Observatory of Artificial Intelligence, at the Institut Français - Centre Saint-Louis. This event was co-organized with the Human Technology Foundation, the French Embassy to the Holy See, and the Pious Establishments of France.

A Franco-Vatican Initiative for Ethical and Human-Centered AI

Established in the fall of 2024, the AI Observatory in Rome is part of a unique dialogue between public institutions, representatives of the Holy See, businesses, researchers, and civil society. The goal is to provide a framework for reflection and concrete proposals to support the deep changes brought about by AI in our societies.

Following a first meeting in December 2024 on AI and the Future of Work, this ongoing dialogue contributed to the report "AI and the Future of Work", presented at the Paris Summit for AI Action in February 2025. The report lays the groundwork for a renewed social dialogue in response to the rapid transformation of work practices and organizations.

A Conference to Better Understand the Challenges of Work in the Age of AI

The May 3 conference explored the real-world impacts of generative AI in the workplace: transformation of skills, changes in professions, new — sometimes emerging or informal — uses, the role of management, and the importance of social dialogue.

The event was opened by Florence Mangin, French Ambassador to the Holy See, and Éric Salobir, President of the Human Technology Foundation. Both emphasized the need to frame AI development within an ethical and responsible context, in the service of the common good.

High-Level Speakers from the Economic and Union Sectors

The roundtable, moderated by Emmanuel Blin, founder of Tech Care for All, brought together three prominent figures involved in the digital transformation of their sectors:

  • Monica de Virgiliis, President of Snam SpA
  • Agnès Gallon, Director of Human Resources at GIE Cartes Bancaires
  • Franca Salis-Madinier, Vice-President of the Workers’ Group at the European Economic and Social Committee

The roundtable concluded with a speech by Mgr Paul Tighe, Secretary of the Dicastery for Culture and Education and representative of the Holy See at the Paris Summit for AI Action.

Our report "AI & The Future of Work : Challenges and recommendations for a responsible and efficient use of artificial intelligence" structured the discussions and allowed for deeper exploration of the impacts of generative AI in the workplace : evolution of jobs, transformation of skills, challenges for social dialogue, role of management, emerging new uses, and best practices to adopt.

A heartfelt thank you to the team at the Institut Français – Centre Saint-Louis and the Pious Establishments of France. And a big thank you to all the participants !
